It occurs to me that all my responses have been in the context of MAME. Are you using this controller for MAME? If not, then some of this won't apply.

Again, if it's for a stand alone cabinet project, then you'll need more keys. Escape is required in order to exit the current game and go back to the interface, for example.

TAB is useful in MAME to change or review control settings, dip switches, etc.

I've never understood the need for multiple coin buttons... If you need two credits, press the "Coin 1" button twice. Are there games that tie coin switches to player positions?

Pause? You gotta have Pause! The phone rings, you need another beer, etc.

: SHIFT button, what do you think?

Gotta have it... but you already do. The I-PAC's uses the 1 Player start as SHIFT.
