Stupid joystick question

Okay, so the Arcade Paradise cab is almost done! However, I'm stuck by this simple question:

I'm using the Happ Super joystick. I hooked up my control panel, and...well, gameplay stank! They're 4-ways. If I want to change these to 8-ways, I just have to flip the actuator over, right? Is the actuator that piece that that looks kind of like a little hourglass? And how the @#$% can I remove that stupid e-ring that's locking the handle in without breaking it??

Also, would anyone recommend the Competition over the Super?

Very frustrating. Arrrgh! Anyways, thanks a heap in advance!
