I investigated this option once but it turned out that the scroll wheel is not an optical axis like the mouse x- and y-axis. It is more like two switches, up and down. It might still be useful (as soon as support for it is included in Allegro or some special scroll wheel MAME build) but not as an optical z-axis...

: You are basically right. A mouse is a small trackball repackaged for function.

: The middle scroll wheel would probably not be userful too you. Mame supports X & Y analog inputs. The scroll wheel is adding another input which MAME will not see. Sorry.

: : Hi,

: : Recently, I came across Yahoo's 4D mouse (from victory multimedia, i think) in a store. I personally prefer trackballs over mice but I thought the 4D mouse might be especially good for hacking. From looking the box, it seems to be a mouse with a tiny trackball that is used for scrolling both vertically AND horizontally. (correct me if I'm wrong)

: : I was wondering if there is a mouse hack out there that takes advantage of the scroll wheel and if it works in MAME. I'm curios if the 4d mouse would also work in MAME. If so, you would essentially be able to hook up a trackball and two spinners using only one mouse board and one mouse port.

: : Any info would be appreciated.
: : Thanks.
