A true arcade tracball is an analog output device - the optical sensors determine both the direction and speed the flywheel is traveling. It is no different than a pc serial mouse.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
I am not sure how much more help I can be - but I have managed to interface a happ controls tracball, an atari steering wheel, and an old arkanoid spinner through a mouse hack (I will be switching to the opti-pac after the first of the year) for use with mame and pc games.
