I don't know if you are running DOS or ArcadeOS but ArcadeOS can remap keys to MAME. So it might be easier to try to add the IR2DOS code into ArcadeOS. If ArcadeOS could read the keys from the IR it could pass them on to MAME.
The source is available for both and then it wouldn't be so dependent on MAME and it could be used with any program that ArcadeOS runs.
