I thought that the Rotary stick have the 12 clicks...but the Optical ones don't.
: Haven't used them personally, but the rotary stick uses the same interface board as Happs trackballs. It should do fine for what you are proposing. The only real drawback is they require about 5 inches of clearance below the top wood and they don't have the click-click action of the mechanical IKARI sticks, but you need Druin's interface to use these.
