Everything posted previously is true and valid. Also, keep in mind, only MAME32 can be used under Windoze 2000 (without setting up a dual boot into DOS) and MAME is better for a slower computer (less than a Celeron 300).
That said, it also varies somewhat by game. Some games run faster in MAME32 and some run faster in DOS MAME. Personally, I run DOS MAME in a Win 98 DOS box and find it faster than MAME32
