Thickness for control panel

Building my first stand-alone control panel, and was wondering what thickness of wood some of you have used before. Would 3/4" be too thick to mount buttons and joysticks?

Also, how long do you typically make your panels? I measured my stand-up games at 24" wide, but this seems a little cramped to me. At least for 2 people sitting in front of a PC.
