I have one of those sticks and yes, they do require that much lower clearance. And yes they're expensive, but my God, is that thing heavy duty!!! But yeah, you could do what you're suggesting. I fitted some Happ grips on 2-way sticks to make Battlezone/Vindicator controls and that works. The only other problem I can think of is if you use a handle as tall as the Tron stick, you gotta realize with all that height you can put a lot of torque on a Super8 base - something for which it was not designed. It'll work, just don't be overly rough with it. I noticed this with my Battlezone sticks.
