I was thinking of using optoencoders from a mouse (ala TwistyGrip) and make the pedals spring loaded. This would be fairly simple to implement into MAME as it already has support for mice. And with a little working, I am sure it could be given a threshold value so that if the pedal was pressed X amount, then it would be "ON". This would work for games that have microswitch-style pedals.

Well, several people have made spring loaded peddles w/ pots... but if you use a mouse... there is almost no way to track it, as it can rotate infinitly. Also, while you can modify mame, it would be a lot harder to modify for comertial games.

99% of commertial games use pots as gas, and brake (y axis) and steering (x axis). If you use pots, you can easily play mame, and other racers and games w/ your pot based control panel.

Also, the main reason for using a pot peddle is to free up the mouse for the steering! Because pots dont rotate all the way arround like sprint and many others games require.

And finally, its quite easy to build BOTH a
Switch AND Pot onto the same peddle assembly.

Sincerely,
Steve
