I use a laptop to play emulator games and have had problems using DOS MAME. I thought it was because of incompatible screen modes, but never had the time to really confirm this. I've just used MAME32. Also, Scitech Display Doctor makes my laptop crash, so I've had a problem using some vesa modes. Also, I remember having problems with sound using DOS emulators. These might be things you want to check on.
