Thanks for your input but even after renumbering all the modelines I still can't use more than 27 or 28 modelines. When I first run AdvancedMAME with my new mame.cfg file with say 50 modelines, the first game I run plays fine but after that I get a modeline parsing error and no games will run. If I go look immediately at the mame.cfg file all my modelines will be gone from the file except for 27 or 28 and the last modeline is half deleted. When I wipe out this partial modeline, than all works fine.
I don't understand it but I have enough modelines for now, thanks again for an outstanding and incredibly useful variation of MAME!! :-)

: The limit high. Something like 128 or 256. The problem may be some modelines with the same ID number.
: For example:
: modeline10 = test1 ...
: modeline10 = test2 ...
: modeline11 = test3 ...
: In this case the modeline test2 isn't used beacuse the ID 10 is already present.
: When you insert manually one modeline you must eventually change the ID if it's already present.
