While talking to Ron (who also contributes in this Forum) he mentioned installing a Ultimate joystick in such a manner that it would rotate 45 degrees on the console, in order to play Q-Bert. This is becasue Q-Bert uses only Diagonals on the joystick (actually, in the arcade, I think it uses only vert-horiz 4 way, but it's indeed rotated 45 degrees on the panel).

Anyhow, I found a quick solution to this problem. A pretty obvious one too, but I think many of you might have missed it:

If you configure options for Q-bert (tilde key) and cofigure the controls, you *WILL* be able to select 2 simultaneous keys for any particular control.
For example:
"up" ----> "a+w"
"down"---> "d+x"
"left"---> "a+x"
"right"--> "d+w"

In short: this means that instead of mapping a single key to a direction, you can map 2 simultaneous keys, therefore effectively telling MAME that the diagonals (which are actually 2 keys together) are the directions to be used.
