I have to agree with the others. For general playing around and perhaps playing some classic emulated games this would work, but quite frankly the ps2 is too inferior a system to bother with trying anything else. I realize you didn't want to start a console war, but for modding purposes and modding purposes only, I have to go there.
Games aside, once (if ever) the filesystem of the xbox is figured out it will be the ulitmate modding box. Why? Well straight out of the box it's a better solution than the ps2 it has a better graphics processor and a 700 mhz processor, as opposed to the puny 400 mhz in the ps2. Also it has a harddrive built in, so no need for that added expense. Also a superior quality phillips dvd drive, 4 psuedo usb ports, and a built in 3com ethernet port.
And yeah you can get a bare-bones system for around the 300 price tag, but not one with a dvd player and 3com ethernet port, a 40$ usb gamepad and a harddrive.
Teh dreamcast is also a much better solution than the ps2. Why? Because it has similar specs, but you can pick one up for about 50-60 bucks. And some of it's games are going for as little as 5 bucks.
For an existing ps2 that your fed-up with, yeah this might be a novel idea to try, but for anyone else, don't even bother.... it's costly, time consuming and you won't have much to show for it when your finished.
Ok there's my two cents... insert flame here :)
