: I think it is the other way arround. 98 will put it's bootloader on disk which only boots 98. Install 98 first than xp. the ntloader should recognize 98 and make an option for it. If not there are site on the internet for doing this (also search for win2k since it is essentially the same).

You are absolutely right. Install WIN98 FIRST, then WINXP. When you install XP, choose to do a new installation, and make sure you install it into a different directly (NOT C:\Windows). The installer with then be smart enough to assume that you want a dual boot setup...
