Spinner without ugly mounting plate?

My new control panel is going to be natural oak, and I don't want an ugly black plate from a spinner. How easy is it to mount a spinner without the plate, or maybe have the plate underneath? Right now I'm looking at the Oscar spinner because it's cheap. :)
