I'm not Matt, but Kilz spray primer is da bomb. I suspect the Kilz brush-on primer is equally good.
I had bad luck with spray paints on MDF. Eventually I wound up putting an undercoat of flat black enamel topped with a granite texture spray coat, followed by several coats of spray polyurethane to finish. This produced a great textured finish. If I wanted to produce a smooth finish, I'd pick up a brush and stay away from the spray cans.
I used 1 1/2" drywall screws into 1x2 ledgers, but the MDF was 5/8". For 3/4", probably 1 3/4" drywall screws would be better.
