Maybe this could be posted at the top of the webpage as sort of a 'New People please read'?
I haven't visited it, but to people really go into the chat room looking for cyber? Jeez...
I'll admit, I'm fairly new here myself (only about a month into it). Almost all of the info I've need I found looking through the examples. How much easier could it be? But, like Bren said, you do need some basic electronics skills. Soldering, how to trace circuits, wiring, etc. Another thing is time. Control panels/cabs/front ends don't build themselves, nor are they built overnight. Except for that one guy on the example page (I forgot his name) who built a cab in a weekend for an auction. But anyway, my only other advice is to read through the examples, this message board and the FAQs. Not only may you stumble upon someone with a similar problem/situation, but it's great to get those creative juices flowing!

: A few tips for newbies :
: 1) DON'T, under any circumstance, bitch, whine, moan or complain about any part of the MAME project, if you had any concept of the scope of the work done on it, you'd petition to make it the eighth Wonder of the World ("Build a pyramid? Sure, right after I get the blitter routines for this done!" *laughs*).
: 2) Don't come into the Chat Room looking to cyber (and named after a Prodigy song).
: 3) Games made before you were born do not "suck". They are the platform that all other games were built off of. As Greg Graffin (Bad Religion) says "There is nothing new under the sun!"
: 4) This hobby requires at least a small amount of electronics knowledge, if you are still in high school, take an elementary electronics course, not only will it keep you from asking about every little thing, but the soldering practice will make your project (and your life) better. If you're not still in school, grab a few book on basic wiring from the library to read instead of Archie comics when you're on the throne.
: 5) There is no "best" anything. Find something that fits your needs, and check if maybe others have used the same hardware/software in a similar configuration.
: 6) "w@r3z pUpz" must die.
: 7) This doesn't mean you can't ask for guidance, there's a wealth of information rattling around in the heads of the community here.
: My two cents,
: Bren...
