OK, so maybe he doesn't understand that the ROMS are dumps from actual arcade games, and that they really can't be 're-written'...

Or that there are physical differences between and 8-way and a 4-way joystick which affect how they send signals (4-ways have little nubs that don't let you hit two switches at once). Maybe he hasn't built his own control panel?

He is most likely trying to play with a Flightstick or something similar.

Now, I'm sure I'm probably more sympathetic since I kinda just started hanging out here. I'm sure once I start seeing the same question asked for the zillionth time, and the answer is just a few posts down, I'll answer with a more 'u r stoopid' post.

So, here are two solutions to your alleged problem:
1. Build a dedicated control panel with a 4-way joystick and a couple buttons. Or add it to your existing panel if there's room.

2. Get some restrictor plates from OSCAR if you already have a control panel with an 8-way.

Like rmfx said, there is no way in software to do this, it's a hardware issue (he must be a programmer :) ). Even if you could recode the ROMS, there are other problems. Would 'up-right' be interpreted as 'up' or 'right' to the game? How would it know that you were pressing 'right' more then you were pressing 'up'?

: just a thought... not that i have many, but i just noticed that the only game i play that uses a 4-way stick is pac-man... will someone please just rewrite the rom so that it wont be jacked up with an 8-way stick... this would save many of us a lot of grief... not to mention quarters...
: thanks,
: Chris
