The NT OSes Do not allow Direct Access to Hardware. I believe this is why you can't do it there are a few threads down below here about possible workarounds. These were posted earlier this week by Ron who makes the MK40/64 encoders. Check that out for a possible workaround. Pobably easiest to continue to use a boot disk though.
