Nope, its diffrent than hardboard with the shiny surface, it an actual laminate on particleboard available in 1/4, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 thickness in 4x8 and 4x10 sheets, many salesman at big lumberyards will try to pass off the ol' shiny hardboard instead of ordering it, the melamine matches plastic laminate, and the hardboard usually is meant to go with tile. At Home Depot and such you will find they sell shelving made of melamine usually with the edge already banded. Its always usually in white, the black is probably a better choice for a cabinet, they do make a standard grey though... Best of luck
