You really need the 4-way, You can't play games like Qix or Pac-Man without it, the 8-way joysticks make your screw up and get stuck trying to get around the maze in Pac-Man.
The only buttons that are in the way are the 3 red buttons from the track ball, But on games that use a 4-way joystick the most buttons you use is 2, like for fire and jump, So the buttons on the track ball are not configured for anything within these games. So if you hold them down during playing a 4-way joystick game it doesnt affect your game whatsoever.
So far since getting the joystick, I have played Ms Pac-Man like 47 times and tempest like 63 times, and I haven't had any problems.

: Yeah I see your point about the spinner. Still looks like the 4-way is in a real bad place. I wonder if they'd consider changing the layout or getting rid of the 4-way.
: : I was worrying about the same thing, But I haven't had any problems yet, Since my main reason for buying a "Controller" was for Tempest. If you look closely at my pictures, There's room for your wrist and forearms to lay flat around the trackball, whether your right handed or left.

: : : When using the spinner or the 4-way stick, it looks like your arm has to lay across other buttons. Not only does it not look comfortable, it seems like it could screw up playing some of the games. Is this a problem? I kind of like laying my arm down and relaxing so I was worried about this.
: : : : Hail All!,
: : : : I just wanted to say a few words about the controller I just bought, It is a SlikStik, And it's my 1st controller. The story starts this way.... As many of you I recieved a cd from a friend who said I think you'll like this. He said it was something called Mame, I was like what's that?, And he told me and i could'nt wait to get home and try it, Damn!, I was hooked, I started playing Tempest (when I was 12 I probally put like $1000.00 in quarters in that game), But and this was a BIG BUT, how the hell can I play tempest with a keyboard???, So I asked my friend and he told me people make their own controllers, He told me that the controller for Tempest was called a Spinner (I didnt even know what it was called).
: : : : So, I started searching, I found Kelsey from Oscar Controls and he helped me out with many questions, He gave me many links to various sites like to X-Arcade, and SlikStik.
: : : : I wanted a Spinner and that's all, But I started looking, I was considering getting an X-Arcade and having Kelsey install a Spinner, That was gonna cost me like $280, But I wanted to try to squeeze a track ball on that too, But that was not possible, So I started looking around and I found the SlikStik.
: : : : So I ordered the SlikStik, Let me say , this controller is huge!, it's 35" wide, 17" deep and 4.5" in the back and 3.5" up front, It must weigh like 30lbs, It has player 1 and two buttons, Green coin buttons, And a Black Pause button, They use an I-PAC and programming is easy with the I-PAC Ultility (Usually you never need to use the I-PACUltility program, you just need to program Mame to the buttons on the SlikStik)
: : : : As of today I have been using my SlikStik for about 7 days and Mame for about 1 month, I was not familliar with Programming buttons with the SlikStik and Mame and I wound up screwing up the whole configuration, So I called tech support and they stayed on the phone with me untill the settings were corrected.
: : : : I'm really happy I went with the SlikStik, If you have any questions for me about it please feel free to email me.
: : : : Thanks for your time,
