While I don't know if it is "ideal" (I still like the mouse/keyboard setup best, probably because I have logged countless hours playing FPS's this way) it does work quite well. It uses a trackball in the middle of the panel, a Happs 3-button trigger stick, and a lot of buttons. There are 10 buttons to the right of the trackball for weapon selection and 12 buttons between the trackball and trigger stick for other things. The trigger stick is set up to fire with the trigger (it does take a while to get used to firing with the left hand) and the top 2 buttons are set up for, depending on the game, mouselook, run, open door, etc. The trigger stick is set up for strafing right and left and moving foward and backward (how most of us use the keyboard arrow keys).
It works very well for all the FPS's I've tried with it: Doom and variants, Quake, Quake II, Dark Forces (which believe it or not uses all the buttons on the panel), Jedi Knight, and Castle Wolfenstein.
The analog Thrustmaster FCS on the right of the panel is there for use with Flight sims which this panel is also designed for.

: I am currently stuck in my electronics building part of the cabinet while I wait on a few parts so I am going to finish up my control boxes. I really want to run a few PC games which are 1st person shooters...Kingpin, Ghost Recon, etc. So I guess my question is what would make up an "ideal" 1st peson shooter setup? Has anyone done this who would like to offer me a little insight?
