The software is only as good as the operator, logowork is my day job, and usually nothing beats doing it right (load the image into the background and hand trace point by point with bezier curves and colour match the resulting curves).

Since most people aren't comfortable doing this, I suggest CorelTRACE (part of the CorelDRAW 10 package - don't use an earlier version, the results are terrible). Keep experimenting with the settings and retracing until you get the best possible results, then clean a bit more in CorelDRAW!

The longtime users here will know about this, but you can try Dragon's Den Sideart below. To see why autotracing possibly isn't such a good idea, check out their art for Centipede, notice how the eye looks like stained glass? Chaos Engine is another good example. (Not taking a shot at the Dragon's Den guys - appreciate their efforts (and I think we happen to be in the same city) just using their content to illustrate a point).

: There are graphic programs that try to convert raster style graphics into object based graphics (ie, these pixels look like a line... so it's a line. This looks like a circle or this arc.)

: They can work really well. But I don't know what works well (shockwave I think does a good job...but thats hearsay)
