I also went to the Amusement Trade show on Tuesday. I'm not actually a trade buyer, I just stumbled across the show's website by accident a few weeks ago, and decided to take a day off work to check it out. :o)
I don't know anything about the universal Joystick but what caught my eye was your mention of a joystick that can be switched from 4 to 8 way operation by a lever. Are you talking about the joystick that is sold by Industrias Lorenzo (ref: A03552)? I've been thinking about buying one of these for some time.
I went to Industrias Lorenzo's stand to try it out and was very impressed. It's probably the best general purpose joystick I've come across. The spring's a little stiff but it can probably be changed for a weaker one.
I noticed that it also appeared on Happs' stand and the guy I spoke to confirmed that they do sell it. However for some bizarre reason it doesn't appear in their catalogue.
Do you know what the joysticks were designed for? The guy I spoke to at happs said they had been designed for a 'special purpose' but didn't say anything further, and I forgot to ask.

: Note: I mean Universal NOT Ultimate!
: I was examining one of these at the Amusement Trade show in London yesterday (when I could see past Frank Happ's copious frame!)
: These appear to be rather good. The advantages seem to be:
: Can be changed to a real 4-way by rotating a restrictor plate
: Small stick, light springing, seem ideal for smaller panels.
: One single hole mounting, no screws.
: Can be rotated (Q-Bert!)
: But I can't see any feedback here about them in actual use. It's impossible to tell what they are really like without using for actual gameplay. Anyone tried these?
: I do have an ulterior motive in asking I admit. I know who manufactures them for Happ and I am thinking of putting them on my site for ordering.
: I have also found the perfect stick which will definitely appear there. You can change this one from an 8 way to a real 4-way (restricted) by flipping a lever! Perfect!
