A Newbie question about Mame.

I am totally new to all of this and my friend and I are trying to figure out how to get mame to work. We got Mame057 and downloaded a few roms and put them in the rom section but I can't seem to find out how to play them. I have Windows 98 and 300mhz. Please help out the newbie.
