I read in the controls section of this site, that you can bend the metal levers that actuate on the microswitches to obtain the desired results.
Moving the lever outwards, is supposed to make the joystick more senstive to diagonal movements but you don't want to overdo it as it will make it too sensitive.

I have not tried it myself. I am at work right know so will not have a chance to do it until tonight, at the very least (I'm also married and have put a little too much time on this). But you can try it at home when you get the chance and post your results.
