The Sidewinder hack is also a viable option. Easy to do (much easier than keyboard hack) and you can get up to 56 buttons (4 gamepads * 14 buttons.) That includes 4 buttons per joystick of course(U, D, L, R.) I am in the midst of setting my panel up with Sidewinders now and so far it's been a cinch. Very easy soldering a few wires to the gamepad and then to your buttons. Much better than a keyboard hack.

The I-PAC is the best keyboard-ish solution available, but I needed more buttons than the I-PAC provides, so rather than buying two I-PACs, I went with MS gamepads. Got 'em for $5 each.
