Yes you're right about the routing thing.
How about a plate that attaches to the panel just like you're doing now, but instead of screwing the "mask" plate pieces onto that plate, have them drop into a square opening on the main plate (with a little tab for easy pop out).
I'm just trying to make it quicker to swap in and out. The people could route it flush to the cabinet if they want to, or just leave it sticking up on top...
