I thought about a few things on my way home from work today;

first, are you running in pure DOS, or under a windows shell?

Second, the TNT card is pretty picky about a few BIOS settings, you will have no end of problems if these are set wrong:

(1) make sure that VIDEO BIOS SHADOW is DISABLED
(2) make sure that SYSTEM BIOS SHADOW is DISABLED
(3) make sure that ENABLE IRQ FOR VGA is ENABLED

after checking these settings (and tweaking them if need be), try running

dmame -soundcard 0 dkong

(or another rom if you dont have dkong)

if it still locks up on the blank screen, try the following:

(1) REM out ALL device drivers in config.sys (should only have files= and buffers=)

(2) REM out ALL device drivers in autoexec.bat

then try it again. if it *still* locks up, try pulling the sound card and try again. it is *possible* that you have some kind of HW conflict between your sound card and the video card; if this last suggestion helps, try moving the sound card to a different slot. Remember that Windows will re-assign IRQs to avoid conflicts; DOS won't do this for (to? ) you.

Again, I have had MUCH better luck with SB16 cards under DOS - you can pick these up for a song on EBay. also check your local goodwill or the like - you might find an old 486 or pentium with a good SB16 ISA card for really cheap (that's how I got my last one)

: sure that would be great(my email is included this time)

: its a Dell Dimension
: 256 MB RAM
: Turtle Beach Montego A3D PCI sound Card
: Pentium II 450 MHZ
: nVIDIA TNT 1.10 graphics card

: : Great, I'll send you a link as soon as it is ready. What is the configuration of the system that you are installing on? (memory, cpu, soundcard, etc)

: : : currently i am loading nothing in config.sys.
: : : i would be interested in the distribution and would be willing to try it out.
: : : thanks a bunch.

: : : : What are you loading in config.sys? I have had problems with MAME and AOS when loading memory managers (ie, QEMM, HIMEM, or EMM386). Note that these are completely unnecessary when running DPMI apps like MAME.

: : : : I am contemplating releasing a simple distribution to make setting up a DOS based cab easier; just about have a bootable ISO ready for testing. Let me know if you are interested and I'l post it for you to try out.

: : : :
: : : : : Wait a few more seconds after that, it should come up. Also, you only need cwsdpmi.exe, you can delete the other files.

: : : : : : i have been trying to get MAME w/ ArcadeOS frontend to run in pure DOS, when i do i get this error "Load Error - no DPMI - Get csdpmi*b.zip". I got csdpmi5b.zip from http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/downloads.htm and putting the 4 cws files(cwsparam.exe, cwsdstub.exe,cwsdpr0.exe,and cwsdpmi.exe) that came with it in both the Arcadeos folder and the Mame folder. now everytime i restart in pure DOS mode and try to run Arcadeos it waits a couple seconds and the screen goes blank and nothing happens. what am i doing wrong?
