I use a single point for each button and a common ground. Actually all the analog buttons use two contacts. The are almost exactly like ground based switches, but when a button is pressed, how close it is to ground is how hard the button is pressed. So simply grounding them out, results in a full press. I forget what voltage an open state is (probably +5v). When connecting to the ABXYWB buttons, use points on the back of the madcatz. There are a series of surface mount resistors (on the left side of the pad). Just attach a wire to the right side of the reisitors for your buttons. The d-pad buttons have solder points on the front side of the pad (easily found right next to the rasied buttons).

: Cool, I've got a Madcatz pad ripped apart. Do you use all three connectors on the button switches to attach to the pad? I guess my big problem is converting the buttons to digital from analog.
: : I successfully hacked the Madcatz Xbox controller. This one had points to which I could actually solder (unlike the MS one). And this time I didn't destroy the pad! Its a very clean hack with a db25 connector and ribbon cable coming out the bottom.
: : I really need to setup a webpage for all my Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox hacking, but don't like geocities. Anyone have any suggestions on a good host?

: : : Has anyone figured how to hack an Xbox control pad? I decided to try the usual positive and negative connection like with psx/dc control pads, but it only stepped up the sensitivity of the analog buttons by one level. If you hit the button too many times it will reach it's limit and cease to work.
