...although you don't need to use Formica (tm) brand. The generic term is "plastic laminate" and there are several brands that are substantially cheaper than Formica but just as good for your purposes. It goes on a lot easier than paint and looks great. Only real drawback is that you'll really want a router and a laminate trimming bit, and those'll cost you if you don't have 'em already.
