mice are cheaper, then, and a trackball is just an upside down mouse. There are a lot more mice to try too.
Logitech USB mice are pretty easy to hack, if all you need is the electronics. The "first moust"/"pilot mouse" is usb and $10-$15. That's what's used in the OSCAR spinner. Don't know about Mac drivers, though.
