1st. try to make it so your control panel is hot swappable. This allows you to build special stuff when you really want.

2nd. Go with as generic as possible for your default control panel. Something that will work with the most games out there.

I personally like 3 over and 4 under with the 4th button the same as the 1st on top. this allows for street fighter and neogeo games to work as expected. There aren't many others that really take a bunch of buttons (and seem to work well with the simple design)

: Anyone want to share their thoughts on how best to arrange a 6 button layout? Most that I have seen have gone with a 3 over 3 arrangement, and I probably would have done the same until I saw Noel Blackman's panel (MAME GTX), with its "SNES Super Advantage Joystick" layout. I have mocked up a temporary control box using this layout, but I am still not sure. If I was thinking, I would have laid out player one with one arrangement, and player two with another, but its too late for that, and I don't want to waste the time on another temp.
