The insides are slightly different, I took apart my Gameport and USB version and discovered this not too long ago. The only thing that I dont like about Gravis's is that since they don't have a common ground, you have to wire a seperate ground for every single ground on every single button, so basically it's about twice as much wiring as you would have with something like a playstation controller.
Note: this is not my own hacking of a gravis gamepad, I forgot which site I got it from so if it's yours and you want to claim credit or something, then just post a message.
