Poll - Keyboard encoder preferences - many inputs or reconfigurability?

: I'm wondering what people think is most useful or important in a keyboard encoder, to have a lot of discreet inputs to hook up many things, or to have it reconfigurable from software once its' wired up to change the key assignments? : Is there anything that can be lived without? I initially think having reprogrammable keys sounds convenient but I think, how often would I need that option once it's all set up?
