optipac, trackball, AdvanceMame on linux

I was wondering if anybody has tried this combination. I am looking to build a control panel with two trackballs.

Will I run into problems with finding a Linux driver that recognizes the optipac?
It has installation instructions for DOS and Windows on the ultimarc website, does this imply that it will not work in Linux?

It seems that it should work flawlessly, as it is designed to be recognized as a serial mouse, but I don't want to put down the cash if it won't.
