If you do your research on keyboard hacks (mameworld is a great resource), you can easily make a keyboard hack that will allow you to have two joysticks with 6 buttons each with *NO* blocking.

It takes some time to figgure out what buttons to use, and some time to tell MAME what they are, but it works fine.
