Ok, this may sound crazy... but I had the same problems (colored spot with linux) but mine would happen at random times and not really during gameplay.

At the time, I chalked it up to the speakers, which I moved to no avail. Anyway I could degauss by turning the TV off and on again.

A week or so later, I was using the computer in the mame machine through a Remote X-Session from the other room. Every time I would do something with big I/O to screen I would hear this rumbling sound. I searched ALL OVER the house eventually after determining that the sound WASN't coming from the cabinet or the harddrive or anything else... but from the RADIO downstairs in the garage which was sitting next to the wall picking up interference from... the Cat5 inside the it.

I got to thinking and then did a few tests...
Sure enough, the magnetic field was coming from
CHEAP network cable in the wall my cabinet was up against.
