He has some code so he can simulate keypresses at any point.

So he could send a '5' after x seconds hoping that the game is up.

btw, I mentioned something similar to the mame team a few years ago. I was trying to get them to store (or return) the number of credits from each game (similar to the highscores) and be able to send in a value that would be added after the game started. This was because I knew someone who owns about 15 arcades, and has a TON of broken arcade boards that aren't worth fixing, but he owns a license to them. I was hoping that we could build a mame box that would allow people to play the boards that he was legal with.

Anyway, they thought it was a cool idea (or just have a save state whenever you exit, and load it when you come back in, so you pay for pacman, you get a credit in pacman. If you swap, and come back, it was there.

But nobody was going to implement it. And even with that, the mame team doesn't necessarily want people using it even when they have the licenses to make money. It was really too bad. They guy might have 400+ arcade games that are dead throughout the years, that he could have thrown onto 5-10 machines legal.
