How "hot swappable" are these? Is it easy to convert to an 8 way in a few seconds, or do I need to open up the control panel and unmount the plates from underneath?

:
: The only dumb question is one not asked :).

: The simple answer is no, you don't need one. The realistic answer, however, is that for games that use 4-way sticks, especially pacman and the like, it just isn't going to be that good without one. Picture yourself with 4 ghosts coming at you from all directions and you being just able to get to that power pill before they turn you into pac-doody. You are heading to the left, but you need to go up, so you push up and suddenly your little yellow friend doesn't go up, but goes to the right, directly into the jaws of Clyde.

: This is what you will experience more often than not with an 8-way stick on a 4-way game.

: So, my advice is that if you are into those kinds of games, get a 4-way stick and you'll be glad you did.

: : ok dumb question time... i know the difference between an 8-way and a 4-way, i also know which ones are used for which games and why they are used. will an 8-way simply not run 4-way games, or do all the people who put a 4 way on their pannel just want the real feel... if mame recieves an input for one of the 4 ways that the game isnt using, does it mess it up or just not care? is it a feel thing or does the game simply not work with an 8-way? i know these are dumb questions, but hey...
: : thanks for the info as always,
