Yes, this question has been answered a zillion times on this board, but here's my answer...
If you play any of the old 4-way games (ms pacman, frogger, donkey kong, etc), you will want a 4-way or one of Oscar's restrictor plates. Playing one of these games for about 30 seconds with an 8 way joystick will answer your question! you either end up with 'dead spots' in the diagonals (best case) or you will get unpredictable results (worst case, typical tho AFAIK)
