try the vga2tv .exe and then enabling hot keys to turn on the ports on with out a device plugged into the laptop...works evertime for me!!!!
firewire hell thats sounds like more work than its worth...use the s-vid to composite cable that ws included or get a vga to bnc wire and hack it to the molex arcade monitor plug it you use an arcade monitor..
