Dont' spend to much time or cash on this solution. It will be worse (in my mind) then the mame setting left-notup-notdown solution since you will no have random diagonals.
4way joysticks are cheap (www.videoconnect.com has them for 10 bucks)
if you don't have room (or just like cool toys)
go with the 4way plates from Oscar. (Oscar, are you going to come out with the exotic plate line? (qbert, 2ways? this will be when the plates really pay off!)
