A few things. Don't hack a keyboard, it will take you forever and never work all that good. Keyboards have a ton of troubles (not easy to solder to, ghosting, matrixs, not configurable). People spend weeks trying to find combination keys that will allow more then 4 buttons pressed.

Consider hacking a joystick instead. They are all designed to work with all the buttons pressed at the same time.

Or the best bet. Buy and encoder. I hacked a keyboard, then a joystick (before getting the keyboard really working). Then I bought an encoder. Ipacs are 40 bucks or so and 28 easy to install buttons are right there. Configuration is easy and you will NOT dissappointed. There are 3 main ones out there. Ipac/Jpac, MK64/48, and Hagstrom. Hagstroms are the most expensive, but great. Ipacs are the cheapest and the great, MK are the best for 4player cabinets and are great. I've never heard a bad thing about any of them.
