Stretch using graphics card?

I was wondering if those of you that use an arcade/PC monitor use Mame's option to stretch the picture using the graphics card, or you use the monitors controls. i.e. you manually adjust the height and width of the picture.
Would the second option provide better results (clarity and speed), or are you happier letting the computer do the work and stretching the game for you?
