Dos is definately going to be faster on a P166. It not that bad to configure. I currently use arcadeos as my frontend for dos. I like it the best out of all the ones I tried. If you have Win 98 or 95 your already half way there to running dos. Go into MSDOS.sys and turn bootgui off. Then you'll boot to dos. You may have to play with your sound drivers to get them to work. The thing I personally like best on the dos approach is I never have to worry about the frontend getting minimized and showing the windows background. Also it seems more stable and is faster. One thing you might consider if you want to use MAME32 is that a lot of P166 which is a socket 7 chip can take up to an AMD k6-2 400. The best one I could find on price watch that should fit is a K6-2 266 for $19. But that will double your speed. If you search you can probably find at least a k6-2 350mhz for under $40 with shipping.
