have a look on mame.dk
for example for mame : http://www.mame.dk/gameinfo/pacman/
you see that there is a parent rom
and you also see that the rom as change since mame 0.53
all of these infos came from mame with the command 'mame -listinfo'
if you want, you can also ask mame to check your roms with the command 'mame -verifysets'
