Alright, I had the same question as well, until I got 3 horizontal pushbuttons for my trackball, cause before I was using vertical pushbuttons for a joystick I made. Here's the low-down on the differences and why you might choose one or the other.
First of all, Horizontal pushbuttons are real easy to get the cherry switch on and off, just snap snap and its on or off. Vertical pushbuttons have a screw that you have to screw out if you want the pushbutton off.
For my control panel, I ordered both Horizontal and Vertical. Since I'm going to have 2 8-ways for fighting games, I went with horizontal pushbuttons since they are a bit lighter feeling on your fingers, and are easier to push down, meaning E.Honda 100-hand slap, no problem. The vertical pushbuttons have a much heavier feel to them, so I'm going to use 4 of them for my 4-way for pac-man type of games, since they feel a lot more old school to me.
So here's what you wanna do when you order your parts, get the horizontal pushbuttons for buttons you think you are going to need to be pushing a lot and need them to be easy to push, get vertical for all the more old school buttons you need, since they are heavier and feel really good for old school Donkey Kong 3 or games like that.
Some people take great offense when you talk about vertical pushbuttons, I really don't get it, but I'm just sayin I like em both fine. If you're worried about space, don't worry bout it, cause having vertical pushbuttons only saves like 1/10 of an inch if you're using quick disconnects, but I must say vertical pushbuttons are easier to get into the cabinet since all you gotta do is slip em down the hole, then screw the nut on the bottom tight, as where horizontal pushbuttons, you gotta slip em down the hole, screw on the nut, THen put the cherry switch on since you can't put the nut over the cherry switch. Btw, don't worry about getting a pushbutton wrench, cause although I guess it would be handy, I've kept my pushbuttons tight for the past few monthes using my fingers, they haven't slipped once.

Good Luck

: Ultimate pushbuttons vs. Horizontal pushbuttons

: From what I've read, horizontals will last longer, but the Ultimates have a more solid feel... They look nearly identical (both are convex)...

: Any feedback is appreciated before I order a bunch...
