You are correct, but as others posted this makes it nearly impossible to play sf on a 4-way since there's a physical block that keeps you from hitting diagonals. I do have a great deal of actual knowledge on this subject. Arcade controls are very simple switching mechanisms, there's not that much to them. Btw, I don't think there's a 12 way, but I have seen the 16 way and 49 way that other's mentioned.

: I BELIEVE - that a 4 way joystick and an 8 way joystick both have ONLY 4 switches (up, down, left, right). The difference between them is that a 4 way can only activate ONE switch at a time. An 8 way joystick can activate one OR two switches at the same time (i.e. up switch and left switch = diagonally to the north west) PLEASE SOMEONE WITH ACTUAL KNOWLEDGE VERIFY THIS FOR ME.
